At Clearfork Stoneworks one will find rustic tables and other furnishings made from clay, stone, glass, metal and reclaimed wood. In an effort to minimize waste of precious resources, materials are gathered from the de-construction of mid to late nineteenth century homes and farm buildings here in Northeast Iowa, and often include iron wheels and other metal parts from early horse drawn farm implements. Table tops and other furnishings are then surfaced with inlaid stone and glass mosaics and are designed, hand cut and tooled here at Clearfork Stoneworks. These reclaimed and now repurposed elements are combined into one of a kind unique designs. The age, wear, rust and sometimes decay of these materials is carefully exposed and honored in new forms. With imagination, the stories can be told of past service as humble tools or simple lumber that served our immigrant ancestors as they settled this beautiful land.
Clearfork’s rustic jewelry is made from salvaged copper pipe and wire, designed and forged on my grandfathers anvil. The copper-work is often enhanced with beach pebbles or fossils, glass or semiprecious stone beads, and even repurposed iron square nails. Intentionally primitive, my jewelry is meant to reflect the beauty of base and common materials. My technique is that of labor intensive hand hammered and tooled copper combined with local ancient river-worn stone and assembled solder-less by means of simple wire-wrap and rivets.
I am passionate about working with my hands and heart to create art forms from simple materials. I find that the process of discovery, the ideas that present themselves and my attempts to meld all into a cohesive and hopefully beautiful adornment for home or body satisfies my need to create.
